Skin’s Beauty Deep
Wishes are conscious
and don’t want to come true;
when a wish does not come true
the wish gets its wish.
After you’ve paid for something
but before you possess it
lies a period in which it’s free
no matter how expensive it was;
and happiness depends on our capacity
to live as many moments of our lives
as possible inside this period.
Every time your heart beats you score one point.
We get to have courage
and no options, or options
and no courage, but never
both courage and options.
Submitting to authorities
makes you more like them;
submitting to those over whom
you have authority makes them
more like you. The mind’s hand
clutches an unwanted feeling like a razor;
confession, not so much removing the razor
as opening the hand.
When all the berries remaining
are unreachable, the bush is picked clean;
it is in reaching for what is unreachable anyway
that you fall into the center of the bush
where all the berries that were hidden
within reach, behind the leaves, are revealed.
Macbeth’s acute awareness
of his own evil
makes him more sympathetic, not less
the more evil he does; our ability to relate
to the worst versions of ourselves,
our damningest, redeemingest trait.
Memory marbles nostalgia
for what never happened
and for what actually did
into one irresistible fiction.
Cry if you want no one to care;
scream if you want no one to hear;
sing if you want no one to know;
joke if you want no one to remember;
speak simply if you want no one to understand.
The dreams the decades tease us with
tease from us our true characters.
History is the longest .gif.

Reality is always real; realism is always a fantasy.

Wonderful!
Full of compelling phrases. I especially enjoyed "the outer boroughs of sense."
