The products companies sell are just the “posts”
of all the “friends” I follow, and clicking “buy”
is me clicking “like” on a post created by my friend.
When a product arrives on my doorstep
that’s a present sent to me by my friend
because they like me in return for me clicking like
one their posts. If, on occasion, I like too many
posts and end up with less money
than I need to eat or pay rent, that’s just me
getting burned out on social media
and needing to take a step back to recharge,
which I consider a form of self-care.
And I know that whatever is wrong with me is fixed
whenever I’ve saved back up enough money
to get back online and reengage
with all the cool posts my friends have been making.
“That’s not social media, that’s consumerism.
You’re deluded,” says some online troll,
a type of attack I find heartbreaking
but it’s the troll’s heart my heart breaks for, not my own.
Wouldn’t it be a sin to give in to self-pity
when all you have to do to feel better
is log back on to Amazon
where all your friends are all waiting for you
with new posts for you to click like on?
It kicks ass to not be alone.
ANNOUNCEMENT: If you like poems you absolutely can’t find on Amazon, there’s a new book of them in the world. CHRISTMAS POEMS, which you can order here, contains ten new poems of mine loosely-based on and/or tightly-themed around Christmas. The printmaker and artist LK James illustrated, designed, printed, and hand-sewed them all. Check out the cover and TOC:

CHRISTMAS POEMS is an ideal stocking stuffer for anyone who loves or suffers the holiday season. I recommend buying two and giving one to someone you love or at least don’t specifically dislike. If you order one and you’re a paid subscriber, let me know in a comment, and I will sign it and/or put something extra in there before they’re mailed out. As of this post, there are about 100 left out of 200 in the first edition. Don’t lose this precious, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become Santa Claus.
As always, thank you for reading, writing, subscribing, breathing, feeling, thinking, dreaming, and being.
I hope you will have them to buy tomorrow!
